What is it?

Object-based audio (OBA) treats each sound as an independent spatial object with position metadata. A rendering engine maps objects to whatever speaker layout the venue has — automatically optimising for the room.

Key Systems

  • Dolby Atmos — 7.1.4 bed + up to 128 objects
  • d&b Soundscape — DS100 engine; installed at CULTVR Lab Cardiff
  • Spatial Audio Designer — Tom Ammermann's object-based tool for domes
  • Meyer SpaceMap — used at the Hayden Planetarium (40 speakers)
