What is it?

Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) extends the basic Ambisonics concept beyond first order (4 channels) to third order (16 channels) and beyond. Each additional order adds more spherical harmonic components, dramatically improving the spatial resolution — sounds lock more tightly to their intended positions.

Why Higher Order?

First-order Ambisonics (FOA) provides basic directional cues but sounds can feel diffuse. Third-order HOA with 16 channels is the sweet spot for professional fulldome — it provides precise enough localisation for most content while remaining manageable in terms of file size and processing.

HOA in Practice

From the DFW Forum transcripts: the Hayden Planetarium upgrade explored 5th–7th order ambisonics for their 40-speaker system, finding the maths had only recently become computationally feasible for real-time rendering at these orders. Most festival submissions use 3rd order HOA (ACN/SN3D) as the standard delivery format.
