JANUS Award — the "Oscar" of fulldome

The oldest continuously running fulldome festival in the world (since 2007) and the most prestigious. The 20th edition in 2026 coincides with the centenary of the Zeiss Planetarium Jena — the world's oldest active planetarium (opened July 18, 1926). Submission forms are live now with no public deadline stated, so submitting early is strongly advised.

What they are looking for

Jena actively encourages artistic experimentation. The programme covers the full spectrum: art films, science/education shows, shorts, features, VJ performances, immersive music theatre, and dome club nights. Independent artists, students, and professionals are all equally welcome.

JANUS Award categories

  • Best Fulldome Innovation
  • Best New Talent
  • Best Feature
  • Best Science & Education
  • Best Art & Experiment
  • Best Fulldome Short
  • Best Fulldome Audio — a dedicated audio prize, rare among festivals
  • Special Jury Award · Lifetime Achievement

Live performances

Live work is a core pillar of the Jena programme. Past editions have featured immersive music theatre with live orchestra (The Gray Cloth), live volumetric capture dance performance (Cloud Bodies by Allison Moore, premiered at SAT and brought to Jena), and multimedia live sets with spatial violin and performance lights. The final evening transforms the planetarium into a full club night with dome VJs and electronic music. Generative audio-visual live performance fits perfectly here.

Venue & audio

The Zeiss Planetarium Jena is a classic tilted dome — intimate and historically significant. The festival community (Bauhaus University Weimar, Frameless Forum) is deeply engaged with spatial audio. A dedicated "Best Fulldome Audio" JANUS award and regular Frameless Forum talks specifically on 3D audio + dome (including talks by Tom Ammermann of New Audio Technology and Claire Dorweiler on combining HOA with fulldome visuals) signal that spatial audio submissions are understood and celebrated here.
